Revitalizing Rio -
for tourists and residents
Ipanema, rated the top beach in the world by many observers. This picture was taken next to The Girl from Ipanema Beach Park, named after the famous song.
Although Rio de Janeiro is recognized as having some of the best scenery and beaches in the world, it does not rank high as a popular tourist destination.
Reasons:
1. Distance from US and European travelers. (But popular South Seas destinations like Bali and Australia are even further.)
2. Crime, particularly in the Copacabana area. (Crime is a problem in Miami too, but it's isolated from Miami Beach.)
3. Traffic congestion and noise, particularly that close to beaches.
4. Lack of tourist amenities (unique shopping, exciting restaurants, landscaped strolling areas, convenient sightseeing attractions).
Desirable types of solutions would feature:
- Changes/ projects that are self-funding.
- Improvements largely built with private financing.
- Rio residents should benefit as much from any changes as do tourists.
- Changes would enhance the appearance/ functioning of Rio as a whole..
There have been useful analyses of Rio's many strengths and weaknesses, as in http://www.rio.rj.gov.br/planoestrategico/ingles/diagnosticoing.html
But tourism improvement plans that are doable are few, because most require a diversion of Brazilian tax monies to support them. Politically it is not popular to divert limited resources from projects in north Rio to projects in the higher income and tourist areas south of downtown. However, the unique
geography of Rio de Janeiro suggests solutions that should be self-funding, accomplishing the above goals.Go to:
